Tokyo has more Michelin stars than any other city, but its real magic lies in the everyday. Start with breakfast at Tsukiji Outer Market — tamago-yaki, fresh tuna, and grilled seafood. For ramen, head to Ikebukuro for rich tonkotsu or Ogikubo for delicate shoyu. Sushi lovers should book at least one high-end omakase experience, but also try the standing sushi bars in Shinjuku. Yakitori in Yurakucho under the train tracks, okonomiyaki in Monja Street, and the late-night gyoza shops in Ikebukuro. Do not miss depachika — the basement food halls of department stores, where you can assemble an incredible picnic.
